Pulaski crowns first-ever Battle of the Books champions

In which book is a friendship bracelet buried?
It was on this question that Pulaski Academy’s first-ever Battle of the Books champions were crowned. With the competition tight after 15 questions, team “Reading Raptors” correctly answered the final question to earn the right to advance to the county-wide competition on March 15.

Twenty-one sixth-grade students at Pulaski Middle School participated in the competition, representing the first students to ever compete in the program for Pulaski.
“This is a great program. It gives students that already read even more incentive and it engages students who don’t typically like to read,” said teacher and Battle of the Books coordinator Jill Truax.

Battle of the Books is a competitive reading incentive program that tests student’s knowledge on 10 books they’ve been assigned to read. During the competition, 16 questions are asked, beginning with the words, “In which book.”

Teams then have between one minute and 30 seconds to deliberate, write their answers down and then voice their answers to judges. Eight points are awarded to teams who correctly identify the book and author based on the question.

According to Truax, the district has been discussing the possibility of bringing Battle of the Books to Pulaski for several years, as it provides a competitive, fun way to engage students in reading. The hope is to expand the competition next year, she said.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for the past several years, and it came together this year,” said Truax. “We’re hoping to get grades three through eight on board next year.”
